See, Breathe, Be
The Sun is Setting
I can SEE.
I can BREATHE.
I can BE.
Questioning reality is a natural human behavior. Existential thoughts linger, reminding us to grip tightly on the tangible. Connection to our environment is crucial to the experience of living. Feeling disconnected is debilitating.
“See, Breathe, Be” intends a connection to our environment, ourselves, and each other. Inspired by nature, these dreamscapes are reflections of my emotions and my instincts. They represent who I have been and who the viewer has been. They are meant to bring us to the present and to create mindful moments in time.
Vision is internal as much as external. Looking inside ourselves is imperative to our growth. Emotional attachment, perceptions, and internal voices all contribute to who we are. Evaluating and accepting ourselves, constantly in flux.
The breath is a powerful entity. It controls our entire existence. Inhaling the past and exhaling the present, tethering us to our surroundings.
The natural world directly impacts our lives. It gives us air to breathe. My work is consciously influenced by the power of the ocean, the marvel of a bird in flight, the moments after the sunset when the sky is perfect pinks and blues. The earth’s beauty lives in mental pictures in my mind. When painting, I take inspiration from the colors I see when I close my eyes. From there, I create loose compositions and allow my instincts to take over. The mindful effect of this exercise creates a oneness with the canvas and the piece starts to come to fruition.
Painting is my meditation. Each detail is a moment of connection with myself and my surroundings. My hope for the viewer is to achieve that same meditative state.
